The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is a voluntary, consensus-based standard that recognizes the life-cycle costing of construction. LEED programs allow design professionals to accumulate credits based on meeting certain criteria pertaining to the use of environmentally friendly, sustainable, and energy-efficient products and systems. LEED addresses all types of buildings and emphasizes strategies in five areas:
1. Sustainable site development
2. Water savings
3. Energy efficiency
4. Materials and resources selection
5. Indoor environmental quality
To become LEED certified, a project must earn a minimum of 26 points out of a total of 69. Additional levels include:
| Silver Gold Platinum |
33-38 39-51 52-69 |
